Question by Mrs Crabtree: How do I completely disinfect my house after a pet has klebsiella?

My parrot has klebsiella (a type of pneumonia) and because it’s airborne, my other parrot is also being treated and the vet said for me to disinfect my house “the best I can”.

Their sunroom won’t be a problem, since it was built with this type of thing in mind. The problem is the rest of the house, especially the bedroom, where they spend 12 hours a night. The walls are all painted sheetrock, the floors are carpeted, and I have an upholstered couch and chair right beside their night cages, plus a tv, lots of what-nots, pictures, etc.

I’m wiping down the ceilings and walls, plus all other hard surfaces with a weak bleach solution, and Stanley Steamer is coming to steam all the carpets.

We don’t have central heat, but I’m vacuuming the heaters.

But what in the world do I do with all this other stuff? There’s lots of stuff that can’t be steamed or bleached. Very, very few chemicals are safe to use around the birds (like disinfectant sprays).

Any suggestions are welcome!

There is this product called “Odo-Ban”. It is a highly powerful cleaning solution. It is used in a lot of hospitals. I would reccomend using it, and then following where you used it with hot water.
They say that cleaners, etc are bad for the birds to smell… but I have been using this product for years, and even to clean their cages. But make sure you wipe with hot water afterwards.

Question by Kiwi is my bird-o: How to keep carpets clean?

I grew up in a house with tile and wood floors, and me and my husbands first apartment was all linoleum floors. Our second apartment is carpeted floors. We’ve lived here nearly 2 years, and it never crossed our minds to actually clean the carpets. The carpeting was always gross, so we threw tons of rugs down. Only thing we’ve ever done is vacuum, and we don’t walk barefoot in the house or sit on the carpet (too gross). My coworker let us borrow his carpet cleaner this weekend, so we could clean the floor. It is the nastiest thing I have habpnds down ever seen come off a floor. I regularly clean the tiled kitchen and bathroom with a scrub brush and bucket of water (like I have always cleaned hard flooring with) so they are always nice, and not much dirt accumulates since I clean them once a week). The carpet on the other hand, I’m just at a loss for words. My husband has gone over the same square of the living room 3 times (on his 4th time), and the water is still coming out black (it’s getting a little clearer every time he empties it). Once we get it clean, what can we do so it doesn’t get this nasty again? I am so disgusted. Obviously, no more shoes in the house, but what other measures can be taken? We don’t have room for a carpet steamer, so we can’t clean it once a month or anything. I do vacuum the living room a few times a week, since we have a parrot and he makes a mess with his seeds, and the bedroom once a week. Suggestions?

Question by princess_jean1: I Need Help Removing Dried Dog Poop from a Hardwood Floor?

I have a dog and she has left poop on my hardwood floors. The poop has dried and I don’t know how to get it up. It is several days old (because I don’t know how to get rid of it). I am in the process of housetraining her, and I use puppy pads. She will pee on them, but she prefers the hardwood floor when she poops. I have heard that a steamer must be used to remove the dried poop. I looked for one on the Internet today and I found that the weight of the steamer is over 100 pounds. This would be too heavy for me. I can handle a vacuum with no trouble. What should I do about the dried poop?

Best answer:

Answer by ainawgsd
Do you have a mop? You don’t need a steamer to remove poop…in fact, I wouldn’t generally recommend using a steamer on hardwood floors at all as they tend to warp the wood. Just soak the poop in soapy water (use your regular cleaning detergent or invest in one of those enzymatic cleaners and dilute it with the water) for 10-15 minutes and mop up with a mop or paper towels. If all of the poop doesn’t come up on the first try, repeat the process until it is clean.

Question by Endurance over speed, me over u!: What is the best machine to clean my wood floors?

Almost all of my house is covered in wood flooring and there are about 8 people in the house. So you can imagine how hard it is to clean massive wood floors that get ALOT of traffic. I need some kind of machine to effectively clean my wood floors. I’ve been researching steamers and steamer vacuums, but I want to know which machine will work best. Also, my wood floors are surface sealed.

Best answer:

Answer by Rusty Nail
Use a damp mop with vinegar and water mixed 10 to 1. Why waste money on a machine that may ruin your floors? If there is any break in the finish on your floor, a steamer is forcing moisture into the wood. This will cause stains and possibly rot. You want as little moisture on your wood floors as possible.
